Z - I´m also worried about Canada not doing good in the last tournaments, I hope this will change in the olympics. And I agree with you, I can bare anyone being the captain, except Toews.

When i was looking up who people were saying would be on the team i was shocked that theyre all the same age. there are no vets on this team. Or maybe they're all vets now at 26?

Almost all of Canada's players deserve Captaincy, tbh. They are stacked with talent and leadership potential. The only one I have any issue being named C is Giroux.

Besides Crosby I would like to see Iginla be captain if he makes the team. I don't know if its just me but I think he has a calming and soothing presence . However I want the IIHF, Olympic committee and NHL to make a deal first before I start thinking about these things. Camp would probably be in August and no deal has been made yet. Hopefully they get that sorted out soon.

They are definitely cutting it close aren't they? Mike Babcock has already been announced as the coach. what are they going to do if the pros dont go? Are him and HItch just going to leave their teams and go coach the amateurs? So weird.

Hmmm I don't think the players would be very happy if their coaches left and went off trying to win Olympic medals lol. I wish they dealt with this during the lockout - to have gotten every present hockey issue solved.

I think that package that the NHL is asking for is for their sponsors. They bring potential sponsors to promote hockey to them because its the perfect venue to do it. it makes sense to me. the IOC makes an insane amount of money from these games in large part because of sponsorships and TV rights. thats in large part due to the NHL players being there and they don't get compensated. I think what they're asking for is reasonable.

I'm thinking there must be some sort of basic agreement in place if Hockey Canada has been given the okay to employ/announce NHL coaches to their staff.

I worked for the Olympics for 4 years and sadly they are an elitist old mens club that care about power and money way more than athletes. Their behaviour is the opposite of their mission statement. That being said. The olympics themselves are magical. I just think if theyre going to give those tickets to sponsors or to VIP's anyway they might as well do it to grow the NHL. Its not like that money or those tickets would have gone to athletes - trust me they wouldn't have.

i worked for the COC (Canadian Olympic Committee) but as you can imagine we work closely with them especially because of Dick Pound and because we were dinning for Toronto in 2008 and then got Vancouver in 2010. I do still have a lot of friends at the IOC and COC. the international sports world is actually really small and everyone knows one another. Each sport has to bid for entry and every year they evaluate which sports are eligible. Its really political & freakishly random. i remember that when i was there Jump Rope was applying to be an Olympic sport. i haven't worked there for 6 years so i don't know which sports have come in an out. it was a disillusioning experience to say the least

Its bizarre - each country has members voted on and they vote in blocks. they team up with other counties and make deals, promises, etc. Its hard to get anything done there based on merit alone. VANOC is much better since it has such a specific purpose. you have a short time to get a lot of stuff done and those committees tend to hate all IOC politics. Congrats to your partner - they did an awesome job!

Sasky, You know me, I am an American but like you half of my family lives on the other side of the border. I think Sid should be the captain. He deserves it and I think his team mates would appreciate it. He is a true leader. He represents Canada well.

Martin is a great choice! I'm a huge fan of Sidney but the way Martin conducts himself is second to none. I'd love to see him as commissioner way down the line, but that's a totally different topic. I'd be really disappointed if St. Louis isn't given a letter. Then again, that's all it is, a letter. It won't stop him from being a strong voice in the locker room and on the ice.

Its probably his last year or few years of playing. Experience! I say Martin for Captain but if not, at least Alternate.

I don't think not being a Captain of his own team is a huge factor. That's a decision that is made mainly by the coaches so I would hope that with Team Canada they form their own opinions based on what they see during Camp, not from what other coaches have decided. Like I said before I'm a huge Sid fan so I wouldn't be surprised or sad to see him picked. I'm just agreeing with Tracy that St. Louis would be a great choice as well.

I agree Martys a great person but i dont even think he's a lock to make the team. He wasn't even considered good enough to be on the last olympic team - he was a reserve. Wouldn't we just be giving it to him cause he's the oldest player? Team Canada will be a team filled with captains from around the NHL - of teams that are contenders for playoff and in tough divisions. His team plays in the weakest division and they can't even win a division championship or get into the playoffs. i don't see the stars on this team taking their lead from him - especially ones that won gold last time. Personally would give it Sid, Toews, Weber or Bergeron - someone who's at least been able to lead their team into the playoffs lately. Just my opinion. It'll be interesting to see what Babcock decides. I can't wait for camps.
